Learn how to turn fresh watermelon into popsicles by either blending and freezing in popsicle molds, or freezing watermelon sticks or wedges. This added-sugar-free popsicle recipe is refreshing and delicious.

    Watermelon Popsicles

There are few things better than fresh watermelon, but turning that fresh watermelon into a popsicle is a close second. This is such a fun way to offer a hydrating food, and there are two simple ways to make them: Either by freezing wedges of the melon or by blending the fruit and freezing it in popsicle molds.

Both ways are easy and fun! They’re also fun enough to serve at a party or holiday, and can be prepped in advance. We love them as a summer treat, an easy snack, or as an ice pop flavor, too.

These sugar-free popsicles are great for teething relief for the littles, too.

    Frozen Watermelon Popsicles

You can simply freeze a wedge or stick of watermelon, with or without a popsicle stick, for a seriously fun way to eat melon. Some people even like to dip these in yogurt and top with sprinkles to make them extra special!

Or, you can dice up the melon and blend into a liquid that gets frozen into popsicles.

My kids prefer the latter option, but see what yours like.

    Ingredients You Need

To make either method, here’s a look at what you need this popsicle recipe.

Ingredients for watermelon popsicles on countertop
    • Watermelon: Any variety will work, though seedless is easier since you don’t have to worry about the seeds.
    • Optional ingredients: With the blended version, you can add a little honey and lime juice to enhance the flavor of the melon if you want. Taste it and sweeten as you like. With the wedges version, you can dip in yogurt and add sprinkles if you want.

You can also add other fruit, such as strawberries, kiwi, or mango, to make a mixed fruit flavor.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s a look at how to make these healthy popsicles. Scroll down to the end of the post for the full information.

    4. Pour into popsicle molds and freeze until firm.

TIP: To make frozen wedges or sticks, cut each round into wedges or sticks as you like. Dip in yogurt if using.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best popsicle molds?

We love ones that release easily, are durable, and easy to clean. I’ve rounded up the top popsicle molds for easy reference.

Do I have to use seedless watermelon to make these?

No, though it is easiest to do it with seedless. If using watermelon with seeds, you’ll want to try to remove most of the seeds if making frozen wedges and all of them if dicing up the fruit and blending.

    How to Store

Store popsicles (either type) in a freezer bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. Try to remove as much air as you can before sealing the bag to reduce the potential for ice crystals forming.

    Best Tips for Success

    • Add honey and lime juice to the blender when making the popsicles for additional flavor as you like.
    • Make them full-size or as mini popsicles.
    • If you don’t have popsicle molds, you can use small bathroom-size paper cups and popsicle sticks.
    • Seedless watermelon is easiest here. If your watermelon has seeds, you probably want to remove as many large seeds as you can before freezing or blending.
    • Try this with honeydew, cantaloupe, or a mix of watermelon an other berries such as strawberries or raspberries.
    • Try the watermelon puree as a drink or puree for a baby.

    • Wash the watermelon and dry. Place onto a cutting board and slice into 1-inch rounds.

    • Cut each round into a stick about the width of two fingers or into a small wedge. Place a popsicle stick into the rind of the wedges, pushing it up 2 inches. Place onto a parchment-paper lined baking tray or dish and freeze for at least 4 hours and up to overnight.

    • Serve or transfer to a freezer bag for longer storage in the freezer.

    Frozen Blended Watermelon Popsicles

    • Wash the watermelon and dry. Place onto a cutting board and slice into rounds. Dice up the watermelon, removing and discarding the rind.

    • Place the diced melon into a blender and blend very smooth.

    • (To make a very smooth popsicle, you can strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer. This removes any lingering pulp, but is totally optional.)

    • Pour the blended watermelon into popsicle molds and freeze for at least 4 hours or up to overnight.
