Tips for Traveling with Young Children During the Holidays

Traveling with young children during the holidays can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With some planning and preparation, you can make your trip enjoyable for you and your kids.

Here are some tips for traveling with young children:

    Plan ahead.

The more planning you do in advance, the smoother your trip will go. Book your flights and accommodations early, and make a list of everything you need to pack. This will help you avoid any last-minute stress.

    Choose the right destination.

When choosing a destination, consider the needs of your children. If they’re young, you’ll want to choose a place that’s family-friendly and has plenty of activities for them to do.

    Pack light.

Traveling with small children means packing a lot of stuff. But try to pack as light as possible. This will make getting around more accessible, and you’ll avoid lugging around heavy suitcases.

    Bring snacks and drinks.

Small children can get hungry and thirsty quickly, so bringing plenty of snacks and drinks on your trip is important. This way, you won’t have to stop for food and drinks every few minutes.

    Take breaks.

Small children have short attention spans, so taking breaks throughout your trip is essential. This will help them avoid getting bored and restless.

    Be flexible.

Things sometimes go differently than planned when traveling with small children. Be prepared to make changes to your schedule as needed.

    What else can parents do?

    • Dress your children in layers. This will make it easy to adjust their clothing as the temperature changes depending on your destination.
    • Take along a change of clothes for everyone, in case of accidents.
    • Bring a first-aid kit, just in case.
    • Bring a stroller or carrier. This will make it easier to get around, especially if you’re traveling with more than one child.
    • Bring a car seat if you’re renting a car.
    • Bring a favorite toy or blanket for each child. This will help them feel comfortable and secure.
    • Be prepared for delays. Flights can often be delayed, so you must be patient and flexible.

Here are some tips for specific holiday travel situations:

    Traveling by plane

    • Arrive at the airport early so you have plenty of time to check in and go through security.
    • Bring a carry-on bag with everything you need for your flight, including snacks and a change of clothes for everyone.
    • You can bring breast milk or formula for your infant through security.
    • If you’re bringing along your toddler, bring a stroller or carrier to make it easier to get around the airport.
    • Once on the plane, keep your child entertained with books, games, and snacks.

    Traveling by car

    • Ensure your car is in good condition and you have all the necessary paperwork, such as your driver’s license and registration.
    • Pack snacks and drinks for the ride.
    • Take breaks every few hours to stretch your legs and let your child run around (supervised).
    • If you’re traveling with an infant, take breaks to feed and change them.
    • If you have a toddler, bring a car seat, toys, and snacks to entertain them.

    Traveling by train

    • Arrive at the train station early so you have plenty of time to board your train.
    • Bring a carry-on bag with everything you need for your trip, including snacks, drinks, and a change of clothes for everyone.
    • For toddlers, bring a stroller or carrier to make getting around the train station easier.
    • Once on the train, keep your child entertained with books, games, and snacks.

No matter how you’re traveling, remember to relax and enjoy your time with your family. The holidays are a special time of year; traveling together will create lasting memories.
