Get a list of 20 different ideas of things to do with your family in San Diego, California. There are lots of things to do from parks, theme parks, outdoor activities, museums, and more!

San Diego is a great place to visit in the United States for nice weather and ocean time. The city is big enough that there are a lot of varied things to do, but not so big that it feels overwhelming at all. Traffic isn’t terrible and the city is family-friendly. San Diego is a fantastic family vacation destination with a variety of fun and educational activities for all ages.

We recently took a spontaneous trip to San Diego as a family and had a fun time! Here are some popular things to do in San Diego.

    1. San Diego Zoo

    • Located in Balboa Park, the world-famous San Diego Zoo is home to over 3,500 animals from around the globe. It’s one of the largest and most visited zoos in the world, offering an amazing experience with exhibits like the Giant Panda Discovery Center and the Elephant Odyssey. We did not do the zoo this last time, but have done it in the past. It is probably my favorite zoo I have ever been to.

    2. Balboa Park

    • Aside from the zoo, Balboa Park offers beautiful gardens, museums, and walking trails. The park is a great place to explore with kids, and the Fleet Science Center and San Diego Air & Space Museum are both family-friendly.

    3. SeaWorld San Diego

    • This is our favorite SeaWorld location we have been to. This last time we went, we spent two days in SeaWorld. For an exciting day of animal shows, aquariums, and thrilling rides, head to SeaWorld. The park offers everything from up-close animal experiences to rides like the Electric Eel and the Wild Arctic, making it perfect for a family outing.

    4. USS Midway Museum

    • This aircraft carrier turned museum offers an interactive experience where families can explore a real aircraft carrier, see aircraft displays, and participate in hands-on activities. It’s both educational and fun!

    5. Legoland California Resort

    • A short drive from San Diego, Legoland is a fantastic amusement park with rides, interactive attractions, and displays made entirely of Lego bricks. It’s especially great for younger kids and families looking for a fun, low-key experience. This last time, we spent one day at Legoland. We have been there before and Kaitlyn and McKenna loved it, so they wanted to go again. Brinley was only 2 the first time we went, so she didn’t remember it. Legoland really does appeal to younger ages–up to age 12. But we are all Lego lovers and still had a lot of fun. As I mentioned earlier, traffic is not bad in San Diego. The drive to and from Legoland was not bad at all.

    6. La Jolla Cove

    • For a more natural experience, visit La Jolla Cove, a picturesque spot known for its sea lions and tide pools. You can explore the coastline, take a kayak tour, or simply enjoy the beach. It’s a great spot for a family picnic, too.

    7. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

    • Step back in time at this historic park, which showcases San Diego’s origins. There are historical buildings, museums, and live demonstrations. It’s a great place for families to learn about local history.

    8. San Diego Safari Park

    • Located in Escondido, this expansive wildlife park allows you to experience safari-like adventures with giraffes, lions, and more. There are walking trails and safari tours that get you up close to the animals in a more natural, open environment.

    9. Coronado Island

    • Take a ferry or drive across the famous Coronado Bridge to this island that offers a beautiful beach, family-friendly dining, and the historic Hotel del Coronado. The beach here is ideal for kids to play and swim.

    10. Mission Bay

    • Perfect for families looking for outdoor fun, Mission Bay has plenty of parks, beaches, and activities. You can rent bikes, paddleboards, or boats, and there’s also a playground at Belmont Park, an old-fashioned amusement park right on the beach. We spent a couple of different days here. It was a really great location with a lot of space. It was a great place to watch the sunset.

    11. Point Loma & Cabrillo National Monument

    • This historical landmark offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Harbor. You can explore the old lighthouse and learn about the history of the area while enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery.

    12. The New Children’s Museum

    • Located in downtown San Diego, this museum offers a creative space for kids to learn through hands-on exhibits and activities. It’s designed to engage children with art, culture, and play in a fun and interactive environment.

    13. Pacific Beach

    • For a laid-back day, head to Pacific Beach. It’s a great place to rent bikes or rollerblades and cruise along the boardwalk, or just relax on the beach and enjoy some family time.

    14. Carlsbad Flower Fields

    • If you’re visiting during the spring, don’t miss the Carlsbad Flower Fields. It’s a colorful and picturesque display of blooming ranunculus flowers, perfect for a family photo op.

    15. Harbor Tours

    • Explore San Diego’s waterfront with a harbor tour. You can take a boat ride to see the skyline, ships, and marine life, and learn about the history of San Diego Bay.

    16. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

    • If your family enjoys hiking and nature, this reserve is a must-visit. It offers easy-to-moderate hiking trails with spectacular views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. There are also other locations to go on little hikes or walks. Download the AllTrails app to find lots of options wherever you are going.

    18. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

    • For a stunning sunset view, take a stroll through Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. The dramatic cliffs and ocean views make for a perfect end to a day of exploring.

    19. Mission San Diego de Alcalá

    • For a glimpse into California’s early history, visit the first of the 21 California missions. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place to learn about the area’s Spanish heritage.

    20. Tijuana Day Trip

    • If you’re up for a short trip, you can cross the border to Tijuana, Mexico, which is just a short drive from San Diego. There’s a vibrant culture, great food, and shops to explore.

With so many options, your family will have an incredible time exploring all the wonderful attractions that San Diego has to offer!
