Celebrate ‘Love Your Pet Day’ with Your Preschooler

February 20 is Love Your Pet Day! It’s the perfect time to show extra love to your furry, scaly, or feathery friends. Young children love animals, and this day is a great way to teach them kindness, responsibility, and appreciation for pets.

Here are some fun and simple ways to celebrate with your preschooler:

    1. Give Your Pet Extra Love

Pets love attention! Spend extra time playing, cuddling, or talking to them. Show your child how to gently pet and care for their animal. If you have a dog, take them for an extra-long walk. If you have a cat, let your child dangle a toy for them to chase. Even fish and turtles enjoy watching you near their tank.

    1. Make a Special Treat

Homemade treats are a fun way to show love. Try making:

    • Peanut butter dog biscuits
    • Tuna treats for cats
    • Chopped fruits or veggies for small pets like rabbits or hamsters

Let your child help stir, mix, or shape the treats. Before feeding your pet, be sure to check which foods are safe for them.

    1. Create a Craft

Kids love to make things. Try these fun pet-themed crafts:

    • A paw print painting: Press your pet’s paw in pet-safe paint and stamp it on paper.
    • A picture of their pet: Have your child draw or paint their furry friend.
    • A homemade pet toy: Make a sock puppet for a cat or a tug toy for a dog.
    1. Read a Book About Pets

Reading together is always special. Try books like:

Talk about how the animals in the book are like your own pet.

    1. Have a Pet Parade

Let your child dress up their pet with a cute bandana, hat, or even a tiny costume. Walk your pet around the house or backyard like a parade. If you don’t have a pet, use stuffed animals and pretend.

    1. Teach About Pet Care

Preschoolers love to help. Show them simple ways to take care of a pet, like:

    • Pouring fresh water in a bowl
    • Brushing their pet’s fur
    • Helping scoop pet food (with supervision)

These small tasks make kids feel responsible and proud.

    1. Donate to a Shelter

If you don’t have a pet, you can still celebrate. Visit a local animal shelter and bring:

    • Old blankets or towels
    • Pet food or treats
    • A small toy

Explain how shelters help animals find loving homes.

    1. Have a Pet Photoshoot

Take cute pictures of your pet with your child. Let them pose together and make silly faces. You can print the photos and create a little scrapbook.

    1. Sing a Pet Song

Kids love music. Try singing songs like:

    • B-I-N-G-O (about a dog)
    • How Much is That Doggy in the Window?
    • Old MacDonald Had a Farm

Let your child make animal sounds as they sing!

    1. Just Say, “I Love You”

The best way to celebrate is to simply love your pet. Teach your child to say kind words and be gentle. Even a small act, like an extra belly rub, makes pets feel special.

These simple activities will help your child appreciate animals and create happy memories with their pet. Enjoy the day and give your pet an extra hug!
