Favorite Chocolate Yogurt – Yummy Toddler Food

With just a few ingredients, you can make the yummiest, creamiest Chocolate Yogurt to share with the kids. Plus, it’s high protein, low added sugar, and ready in 5 minutes!

After making Vanilla Yogurt, Lemon Yogurt, and Peanut Butter Yogurt, I knew it was time to try Chocolate Yogurt—because there are days when we just need to start with rich cocoa flavors right off the bat!

This homemade flavored yogurt has less added sugar than the kind you can buy at the store, you can customize it to your family’s liking, and it’s delicious plain or with a topping.

The Chocolate Yogurt works with fruit and/or homemade granola as a healthy toddler breakfast, a breakfast for you, or even a simple snack or dessert. It stores well in the fridge, so you can make a double batch to enjoy all week!

    Ingredients You Need

Here’s a look at what you need to make this Chocolate Yogurt so you know what to have on hand.

Ingredients for chocolate yogurt on countertop.
    • Yogurt (whole milk, preferably): You can use vanilla or plain Greek style yogurt or regular yogurt in this recipe. Making Chocolate Greek yogurt will result in a slightly creamier end result simply because the yogurt is thicker.
    • Vanilla extract: I like to add vanilla extract to this yogurt for toddlers (and for myself) since it adds flavor and rounds out the flavor from the cocoa.
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder: Adding cocoa powder to the yogurt adds the chocolate flavor. Use one that you enjoy the flavor of.
    • Honey (or maple syrup): You may want to sweeten this recipe a little to taste, so you can use honey (for kids over age 1), maple syrup, or agave nectar. To make it without added sugar, omit it or add a little Banana Puree or Mango Puree.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s a preview of how to make this Chocolate Yogurt so you know what to expect from the process. Scroll down to the end of this post for the full information, including the amounts and the timing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What goes well with Chocolate Yogurt?

Raspberries, sliced strawberries, blueberries, other berries, granola (just be sure to avoid ones with whole nuts for the kids), chocolate chips, unsweetened coconut flakes, or other toppings that sound good to you.

Is this similar to your Vegan Chocolate Mousse?

That recipe is thicker and more decadent due to the fat content in coconut milk. This yogurt recipe is more similar to pudding or flavored yogurt and can still work well if you have a sweet tooth or dessert for chocolate.

How can I make this without caffeine?

Look for Dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa powder, which has most of the caffeine removed. Or you can use carob powder.

    How to Store

Store Chocolate Yogurt in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir before serving or if you see liquid separate at all from the yogurt. (That is common and harmless.)

    Best Tips for Success

    • Use plain Greek yogurt for lower added sugar and maximum creaminess.
    • Try this as a dip for fruit for an after school snack.
    • Add a drizzle of hemp seeds, chia seeds, or fruit to add fiber.
    • Serve as a healthy dessert or for breakfast or snack as you like.
