Creative and Fun Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day with Young Kids

Father’s Day is a special opportunity to celebrate the dads, granddads, stepdads, and father figures who show up every day with love, support, and endless dad jokes. However, when you’ve little ones around—especially preschoolers—it can take a bit of creativity to make the day feel special, fun, and age-appropriate. Fortunately, Father’s Day doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive to be meaningful. It’s all about making memories together.

Here are some sweet and simple ways to celebrate Father’s Day with young kids:

    1. Make a “Daddy and Me” Breakfast

Start the day with a fun breakfast that your little ones can help prepare. Think pancakes with silly toppings, toast cut into heart shapes, or a cereal “buffet” with different choices. Kids can help stir the batter, pour the juice, or sprinkle on toppings. For an extra touch, let them create a “menu” and play restaurant while Dad relaxes and enjoys his morning meal. Check out this cute video for inspiration.

    1. Create a Handmade Father’s Day Gift Together

Crafts made by tiny hands never go out of style. Try a DIY handprint card, painted picture frame, or a “Why I Love Daddy” book where your child fills in simple prompts (with help, of course). These heartfelt gifts may be messy, but they’re guaranteed to bring a smile to Dad’s face and become treasured keepsakes.

    1. Plan a Backyard Adventure

If the weather is nice, turn your backyard into a Father’s Day adventure zone. Set up a mini scavenger hunt with picture clues, have a water balloon toss, or build a fort. Even something as simple as running through the sprinkler can become a memory-making experience when you do it together.

    1. Have a Family Picnic

Pack up some snacks, a blanket, and head to a local park—or just your own yard. Let the kids help choose the picnic menu (finger foods like sandwiches, fruit, and cookies are perfect), and bring along a ball or bubbles for post-lunch fun. It’s a low-pressure way to spend quality time together outside.

    1. Start a New Father’s Day Tradition

Young children thrive on routine, so why not start a fun Father’s Day tradition? It could be something as simple as reading Dad’s favorite story together or watching a special movie as a family each year. Traditions don’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful…they just need to be consistent and joyful.

    1. Let Kids Interview Dad

Preschoolers love asking questions, so turn that curiosity into a fun “Dad Interview.” Come up with a few kid-friendly questions like “What’s your favorite food?”, “What was your job when you were little?”, or “What’s the silliest thing you’ve ever done?” Record the answers or write them down in a little “Dad Fact File.” It’s a fun way to learn more about Dad and gives him a chance to share stories with his little ones.

    1. Host a Father’s Day Dance Party

Put on some of Dad’s favorite tunes (and a few of the kids’ faves too) and get the whole family dancing around the living room. Preschoolers love to move, and seeing Dad get goofy with them is guaranteed to bring lots of giggles. Bonus points for glow sticks or silly costumes!

    1. End with a Special Storytime

Wind down the day by reading a story together. Choose a book that celebrates dads or families, or snuggle up with a bedtime favorite. Reading together creates a calm, connected end to a day full of activity and fun.

Father’s Day doesn’t need to be picture-perfect. When you’ve got preschool-aged kids, the magic lies in the small, heartfelt moments. Whatever you do, if it’s done with love, it’s the perfect way to say “thanks, Dad.”
