Supplies Needed To Make Edible Mud Recipe

    Note:

These were the proportions we used. This is a very flexible recipe. You can really estimate these ingredients as you are working. If the mixture starts to solidify, just add a touch more water.

How To Make Taste Safe Mud Recipe

Steps for making edible mud: 1-edible mud sensory activity for kids- steps to make edible mud, cocoa powder, sugar, brown sugar, chocolate syrup and a good stir in aluminum pans
Sweet, tasty, gritty, that’s what this delicious edible mud is!

    Step 1

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl or aluminum foil container. Start with the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder & sugars. Then add the liquid ingredients: syrup and water. Stir with a spoon to create pretend mud.

    Step 2 – Optional

Step 2 for making edible mud: edible mud sensory activity- add udon noodles died and gummy worms to make worms for your edible mud
Add Udon noodles for more realistic looking worms!

It is fun to sprinkle in some worms to your mud. I used udon noodles, boiled in water with black food coloring added. I also added gummy worms, which were all eaten.

Our Experience with Safe Sensory Play Mud

1-edible mud sensory activity kids- kids playing with gummy worms in the gooey slimy edible mud
    It’s slimy and gooey!
    • I chose Japanese udon noodles because of their thickness, but you could use spaghetti or yakisoba noodles also.
    • The kids will love squishing their hands in the muddy mixture. Get some disposable foil pie pans if they want to make mud pies. The little ones won’t be able to resist licking their hands, and that is allowed in this sensory play activity.
    • You can change up the taste-safe mud consistency by adding liquid or more flour.
    • Send some favorite toys through the dishwasher (we used farm animals and dinosaurs) and add them to the sensory bucket of fun. Oh, pigs fit in REALLY well {giggle}.

Parenting Tips for an Easy Clean Up

edible mud sensory play kids tactile - 4 children's hands in tub of play mud
    • Use a disposable roasting pan from the Dollar Store.
    • Use a Dollar Store plastic table cloth underneath your kids and the pan.
    • Wear large old t-shirts that can get messy.
    • When play is done, wrap the plastic table cloth around the disposable roasting pan, and tie a knot to seal in the mess. Dispose.
    • Strip the kids down and hose them off.
    • We don’t recommend storage of your chocolate pudding like mud. One use is best due to bacteria growth that could occur due to little hands at play in the edible dirt.

    Edible Mud Sensory Play

I am a huge proponent of getting kids into the kitchen. They learn so much by “helping” prepare food. And this is the perfect opportunity for your kids to explore dumping and pouring with you.

None of the measurements need to be exact. There’s a huge container for the mixing, so kids have a less likely chance of spilling. I simply bought a dollar store foil tin so that I could throw it all away in the end. Easy clean-up is always a bonus.

Time to get the kids mixing up the “mud” for our activity!

    Materials

    • 3 Cups Flour
    • 1 Cup Cocoa Power
    • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
    • 1 Cup White Sugar
    • 1/4 Cup Hershey Syrup (optional)
    • 3 Cups Water

    Instructions

    1. Mix all of the ingredients together and stir, to create mud.
    2. It is fun to add worms to your mud. I used udon noodles, boiled in water with black food coloring added.
    3. I also added gummy worms, which were all eaten.
    4. I chose Japanese udon noodles because of their thickness, but you could use spaghetti or yakisoba noodles also.
