How to Make a Very Hungry Caterpillar Necklace

We adore toilet paper roll crafts here at Kids Activities Blog. After reading our favorite Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I headed straight for our stash of recycled toilet paper rolls to create this fun caterpillar necklace with my preschooler.

Supplies Needed for Toilet Paper Roll Very Hungry Caterpillar Craft

Directions for Very Hungry Caterpillar Craft

    Step 1

We started by painting all of our toilet paper rolls.  We painted 3 craft rolls green and 1 craft roll red {for the head}.

    Step 2

After the painted toilet rolls dried, we cut the craft rolls into small sections by flattening the rolls and cutting them into thirds.

    Step 3

We punched two holes into the red toilet paper roll and then threaded the black pipe cleaner through the punched holes to make caterpillar antennas.

Finish with caterpillar details and string to make a necklace!

    Step 4

Now draw the Very Hungry Caterpillar face with a black marker. My preschooler drew on the face in the picture – isn’t it cute?!

    Step 5

Now it is time to thread the painted craft roll “beads” onto a ribbon or string to make your own very own hungry caterpillar necklace.

    (Optional) Step 6

If your child will be wearing this necklace, you may consider adding a breakaway clasp for safety by using a plastic breakaway clasp with ribbon or string attached on each end.

    Finished Very Hungry Caterpillar Craft

The finished toilet paper roll Very Hungry Caterpillar craft was so cute that I  have to admit that I wore it for a while too! It is hanging on the side of our bookcase where it can be easily accessed to wear whenever we read the book!

Our Experience Making this Toilet Paper Roll Craft

Since we’ve made a toilet paper roll necklace before, I knew this Very Hungry Caterpillar necklace craft would be a hit! We have used it as a letter c craft.

The initial inspiration came from this threading activity from The Imagination Tree.  I loved that  simple toilet paper roll crafts encouraged basic threading skills for toddlers and preschoolers to develop fine motor skills.

    Materials

    • Empty toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls (or you can purchase craft rolls)
    • Watercolor paint or acrylic paint in colors, green and red
    • Permanent marker like a Sharpie
    • Dark colored pipe cleaner
    • String, ribbon or yarn
    • Hole punch
    • (Optional) Necklace safety clasp

    Instructions

    1. We started by painting all of our toilet paper rolls.  We painted 3 craft rolls green and 1 craft roll red {for the head}.
    2. After the painted toilet rolls dried, we cut the craft rolls into small sections by flattening the rolls and cutting them into thirds.
    3. We punched two holes into the red toilet paper roll and then threaded the black pipe cleaner through the punched holes to make caterpillar antennas.
    4. Now draw the Very Hungry Caterpillar face with a black marker. My preschooler drew on the face in the picture – isn’t it cute?!
    5. Now it is time to thread the painted craft roll “beads” onto a ribbon or string to make your own very own hungry caterpillar necklace.
