    Celebrating Memorial Day

Memorial Day, May 29, 2023, is a day to honor and remember those who have served in the U.S. military and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We reflect on the bravery and courage of those who have served and remember those who have passed away. It is also a day to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

    Celebrating with Children

Memorial Day weekend can be a great time to teach children about the meaning behind the holiday. There are many ways to do this. Start by visiting a local veterans’ memorial or cemetery, attending a parade or ceremony, or having a family discussion about honoring those who have served.

Families with young children can do other activities over Memorial Day weekend. How about going to a local park or beach, having a picnic, or playing outdoor games?

Here are some ideas for you to do with your family over Memorial Day weekend:

    1. Attend a local parade or ceremony: Many cities and towns hold parades or ceremonies to honor fallen soldiers over Memorial Day weekend. These events can be an excellent opportunity to teach children about the importance of the holiday. See how the community comes together to honor those who have served.

    2. Have a family picnic: Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, so why not kick off the season with a family picnic? Pack sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and drinks, and head to a local park or beach. You can also bring outdoor games like frisbees, kites, or a ball to toss around. And don’t forget your picnic blanket!

    3. Visit a local museum or historical site: Memorial Day is a great time to explore local museums or historical sites with special exhibits or events in honor of the holiday. This can be a fun and educational way to spend the day with your children and learn more about the history of our country.

    4. Have a backyard barbecue: Fire up the grill and invite friends and family over for a backyard barbecue. The kids can help set up decorations, prepare the food, or make desserts. Remember to have some fun outdoor activities, such as a water balloon toss or a game of hide-and-go-seek.

    5. Make patriotic crafts: Get creative with your children by making patriotic crafts, such as red, white, and blue pinwheels or paper flags. This is a fun way to get into the holiday spirit and decorate your home or yard.

No matter how you spend your Memorial Day weekend, it is important to take time out to remember and honor those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

How will you be spending this Memorial Day?
