    Best Homemade Baby Rice Cereal

Soaking the rice is optional but recommended. It may help it be a little easier for baby to digest, but as long as you cook the rice until very soft, it is not 100% necessary if you’re short on time. The directions, timing, and liquid used here are based on soaking the rice and using the short-grain brown rice from Lundberg.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What should the texture of food be for 6 month old babies?

Aim for food for infants of this age to be soft so it’s easy for them to move around in their mouths, either with a puree or a baby-led weaning food.

How can I serve apples and pears to my baby?

You can slice and roast as a baby led weaning food or steam, let cool, and blend into a puree.

What’s the best way to introduce peanuts to a baby?

It’s easy to blend plain peanut butter with water to make a thin peanut butter puree. Or you can spread a little bit onto toast for a baby led weaning food. You can also stir it into infant cereal.

baby led weaning plates on countertop.

    How to Store Baby Food

You can store baby food in the fridge in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Or, you can freeze it for up to 6 months. Storing homemade baby food in the freezer allows you to make a bigger batch at once, and then serve it to baby over the course of a few weeks or months.

One of the easiest way is to use an ice cube tray, which has the added benefit of portioning out the baby food nicely.

    Best Tips for Success

    • Talk to your pediatrician about any concerns about starting solids or potential food allergens.
    • Make sure baby is securely sitting in an upright position in a highchair for meals.
    • Consider giving baby the chance to feed themselves and have more control over putting food into their mouths by preloading spoons with food and allowing them to self-feed.
    • Aim for a mix of foods and flavors over the course of a week.
    • Check out my baby feeding schedules and sample meal plans for examples of how to fit in solids along with formula bottle or breast milk feedings.
